Pachydiscus catarinae Anderson & Hanna, 1935: Late Cretaceous (Campanian/Maastrichtian) (74 my), Cabrillo Formation, Point Loma, San Diego Co., California [approx. 500 mm diam.]. LACMIP locality 4926.
This exceptional specimen was found on a rock and boulder beach within a concretion nearly two feet in diameter that weighed over 500 pounds. Because removal of the specimen required the use of a helicopter, it has been dubbed "The Flying Ammonite" by the collectors and preparators (see Wilson, E.C., 1976, Terra Magazine, 14(4):3-7, for details of the move).
