Station Data for Panama Paleontology Project Recent Dredging Program

These data include geographic information for stations in the Caribbean and Tropical Eastern Pacific. Dredge samples from these stations were obtained as part of the Panama Paleontology Project. Work is coordinated by Helena Fortunato, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

Sample information is stored in ctpa_may2001.csv. This table includes twelve columns:

  1. CTPANUM - A unique index code for each sample.
  2. OCEAN - Whether the sample was recovered from the Atlantic (A) or Pacific (P) Ocean.
  3. REGION - A code indicating the region from which each sample was obtained. Codes are CMN= Cayos Misquitos, Nicaragua; LCH =Los Cochinos, Honduras; GC = Gulf of Chiriqui, Panamá GP = Gulf of Panamá, Panamá SB= San Blas Islands, Panamá.
  4. FIELDNO - a sample code used during field work.
  5. DEGLAT and MINLAT - Degrees and Minutes latitude of each sampling station. All stations are north of the equator.
  6. DEGLONG and MINLONG - Degrees and minues longitude west of the prime meridian.
  7. DEPTH - Water depth in meters from which sample was obtained.
  8. BOTTOMTYPE - A brief description of the sedments associated with each station.
  9. ASSOCBIOTA - An abbreviated list of common biota associated with each sample.
  10. DREDGENO - The number of dredges recovered from each station.
  11. GRABNO - The number of grab samples recovered from each station.
  12. SEDNO - The number of sediment samples recovered from each station.
The distribution of bivalve genera and subgenera from these samples is available from the Neogene Marine Biota of Tropical America Project.

This project has been supported by the Smithsonian Institution. The crew of R/V Urraca provided friendly and invaluable support during sampling cruises. For more information regarding the sampling program, please contact Helena Fortunato.
